Deck: We are such stuff as dreams are made on

When I was reminded that yesterday was the 400th anniversary of the death of Shakespeare, being somewhat of a fan of the Bard, I felt in the mood to do something, however small to mark the occasion. Thus, a Shakespeare-themed deck. I considered a few options – obviously I could have gone for Macbeth and built an Ent deck for Birnam Wood coming to Dunsinane (that being, I think I read somewhere, part of Tolkien’s inspiration for the existence of the Ents); or I considered doing a chump-blocking focused deck with Horn of Gondor/Eomer/Imrahil for Shylock in The Merchant of Venice “If you prick us, do we not bleed? If you tickle us, do we not laugh? If you poison us, do we not die? And if you wrong us, shall we not revenge?” In the end though, I settled on a deck themed around Shakespeare’s last play, The Tempest. Casting Gandalf as Prospero, Eowyn as Miranda, and Grima as Caliban. The Silvan allies then represent the spirits Prospero calls on to entertain his guests in the masque, their tendency to pop in and out fitting the description of the spirits melting into thin air.

Decklist on RingsDB

I’m not going to go too in depth for this one, because I intended it more as a fun little idea as a nod to the occasion rather than a serious deck. It does play out quite nicely once it gets going though. Stack actions on Gandalf, bounce your Silvans as appropriate, keep your threat under control, should have plenty of resources between the Staff, Keys, O Lorien and Grima; you can make use of Gandalf’s ability to play from the top of the deck once per phase to speed through your deck faster by playing events in multiple phases. Above all just enjoy it.

“Our revels now are ended. These our actors,
As I foretold you, were all spirits, and
Are melted into air, into thin air;
And, like the baseless fabric of this vision,
The cloud-capp’d towers, the gorgeous palaces,
The solemn temples, the great globe itself,
Yea, all which it inherit, shall dissolve,
And, like this insubstantial pageant faded,
Leave not a rack behind. We are such stuff
As dreams are made on; and our little life
Is rounded with a sleep.”
